Solidarietà e Servizi is a Social Cooperative founded in 1979 and based in Busto Arsizio, in the district of Varese. It offers assistance to disabled people, minors, elderly, frail people and also carries out activities aimed at providing employment for disabled and disadvantaged people.
It offers the following services:
- Assistance to disabled people (day care and residential services)
- Support to minors (support, pre-school, after school, summer camps)
- Nursing assistance and domiciliary physiotherapy
- Contract manufacturing activities aimed at providing employment for disadvantaged, disabled and frail people (production of gaskets, rigenesis of routers for big telephony companies, document management, call centers, back-office activities, …)
The Cooperative has started a project to develop a new company branch RESS (Resistenze Elettriche Solidarietà e Servizi) with the aim of producing in-house resistors for driving and braking of electrical engines. The challenge is to fit into a complex market like the electrical-mechanical one, producing high quality products at affordable prices, encouraging the professional reintegration of frail and disadvantaged people.
In order to operate and compete in such a complex sector, RESS – Solidarietà e Servizi has identified the critical success factors on which they want to focus and which they think can be winning aspects:
- Short delivery times
- Punctuality in delivery terms
- Continuous investments (new products and Instrumentation)
- Approach to the international market
In this relationship with the Cooperative, the companies can see, along with these technical commercial elements, the opportunity to promote their corporate Social Responsibility. From a strategic point of view, it enables companies to communicate – through their work – the ethical values and virtues that characterize them, addressing and facilitating solutions to social problems. The possibility to support the employment of frail and disadvantaged people goes in this direction.
A benefit for everyone
The Cooperative is also able to activate, in collaboration with the districts and its customers, appropriate conventions to accomplish (via activation of service and supply contracts) the obligations of the Law 68/99 “Standards for the right to work of disabled people”.
Companies subject to the requirement of taking underprivileged people (68/99 Law governing the “Standards for the right to work of persons with disabilities”) can fulfill this obligation through the assignment of work orders to social cooperatives. During the contract, the company has the ability to compute the disabled workers – working at the cooperative in charge of executing the Convention – to cover its share of obligation.
The work support is undoubtedly the ultimate goal of the project. The work in RESS is designed as an educational and rehabilitative process that allows fragile people to work in a typical technologically advanced and complex industrial environment.
The success of the project is given by the opportunity for people to be employed; starting from simple processes such as assembly or data entry, moving on to more complex tasks such as document management or call centers, they can get, wherever possible, to work in a production environment next to in profit companies.
